Man, it is hard to buy a vehicle. I can see how people get screwed all the time with high pressure sales tactics.
The Ridgeline I am looking at is $30500. Taxes and fees take it to $33214. Extended warranty package + 4 pre-paid oil changes makes it $36308(this is really expensive for extended warranty, we paid under $900 for my dad’s 7 year Toyota platinum on a $47000 Tundra). If I can get 4% interest rate, that is $40120 in 5 years.
Let’s take a look at a new one. They have what seems like minimum $3000 on the hood. So, a $40250 truck minus $3000, plus taxes and fees, it ends up being right at $40385 . But, Honda has 1.9% for 60 months (far from stellar, I expected 0% these days). It ends up being $42472 for a brand new car after 5 years of interest .
So, I can have a used car, with 27000 miles and extended warranty, and save $2352 over brand new car with full factory warranty with no ones farts in the seats. That is 87 cents per mile. Crazy. Might just buy new.

Why on earth would you get an extended warranty on a Honda?

I’m a little bit in the market right now for a replacement to our 03 Odyssey. I’m not crazy about any of the Oddys since that generation, but finding a used one that is affordable with reasonably low miles is difficult.

“with no ones farts in the seats." What do you think dealer prep is?

There are some vehicles you should just buy new (tacomas, 4runners, Wranglers, and apparently Ridgelines) rather than late model. Drive the hell out of it, or get bored fast, and you will be amazed how its held its value!

You have to hunt for a while to find a good deal on a used japanese car as they hold their value so well. We looked for a month before we found the options and price wanted on my wife’s Hybrid RAV4, we ended up saving like $7k over new (25k v 3 2k) so it was worth it for us.
At the same time the dealer tried to sell us on an extended warranty at $4k - I laughed at him. It’s a hybrid toyota, the damn thing will outlive me with basic maintenance!
Good luck on the Ridgeline hunt, they’ve always intrigued me.

That’s because everybody else is holding on to their old ones to.

Having had a 6 cyl Odyssey, I can’t imagine only having 4 in such a large vehicle.

I’m currently working on a 17-year restoration project. We’re on our second engine and second transmission (different jobs), and I’m getting ready to replace the front struts again. We’ve got 222k miles on ours, and have driven it all over the country. I love it.

It makes 190 hp, which is plenty. It is also much easier to work on :o)

Or, for that matter, a Ridgeline.

Yeesh. Original everything except normal wear parts on my 205k mile Tundra. Runs like a new truck. My wife’s BMW has over 150k miles on it and the engine and trans are still solid (knock on wood).

I put 372k on my 2000 Oddy, 3 transmissions but the original V6, before I sold it in working condition a few years ago.

Just to compare it with what I’d get with a new car. Plus, memories of Honda transmissions going bang on V6 models are still fresh. Do you not remember that stuff?

We want to keep it for 10 years. With this kind (or lack thereof) of depreciation on new, you might be right.

Used one makes some sense if we don’t get the extended warranty. New 2020’s have a 9 speed instead of 6 speed in 2019’s, but their supply chain is fucked - no RTL in Colorado, only RTL-E which is $43000. Not sure if it’s worth it over the RTL for $40000.

Because V6/auto Honda's are all dogshit. If this were about a 4 cylinder Honda I'd agree.

On the other hand, if Honda’s reputation is well deserved, an extended warranty on a Honda should be cheap.
I still wouldn’t get it in the sense that I don’t like to insure against non-ruinous costs, but the extended warranty companies should have some idea as to how reliable and cheap to repair these are.

Also see Jeep wranglers and Subaru STis. And for the worst offender of all, Diesel trucks!

Yeah, Subarus in general. I once bought a Loyale for $800 and sold it a few years later for $2,500. Wish I still had that car. Manual, 4wd wagon. Why the fuck did I sell that thing?

I had 215k on my 2001 Golf, original engine, original clutch . I’d still have it if some drunk hadn’t totaled it in front of my house one night.

You need to start shopping even older cars. You may spend a bit here and there for small repairs (if you don’t do repairs yourself), but it’s a better value. Buy things at the end of their depreciation curve. IMO 30k is way too much for a depreciating liability.

We have a 2000 Tundra and 2004 Fit. This would be the one “new” car for the family.
